Janis and Big Brother & the Holding Company at Anchor 1966

I had to post these pictures from the Anchor tasting room in San Francisco!  The series of pics were taken in June 1966 by noted Haight-Ashbury photographer Bill Brach.  This is the Janis Joplin fronted Big Brother & the Holding Company enjoying a beer at the recently resurrected Anchor Brewing Company that craft brewing pioneer Fritz Maytag purchased in 1965.  Outstanding!!!

  1. My name is Bill Brach. I just saw your post on the Big Brother and the Holding Company at the Anchor Steam Brewery. In 1966 the price of a glass of Anchor beer in a bar was $.05 less than the price of Hamms, Regal Pale, Burgermeister and other local beers. Nobody liked the dark brew. But I did and that's why I took Big Brother, Janis had just joined the band and I was the first to photographed the new addition, to Anchor. They were a great brewery in an old part of town and looked cool. When we entered, and I didn't make an appointment, they greeted us with a nice glass of beer and we were never without a full glass during the entire shoot. Chet Helms, their manager said "Bill, I can't use any of these photos because there isn't one that doesn't have a glass of beer in it.
